Portrait Photographer in Duxbury, MA

I'm Chris McCarthy, a portrait photographer based in Rockland. Duxbury has one of the most dramatic natural settings on the South Shore — miles of open barrier beach, historic farmland, and a bay that catches the light in a way that never gets old.

What we can create together in Duxbury.

Duxbury is exceptional portrait territory. The combination of open barrier beach, sheltered bay water, historic New England architecture, and conservation marshland gives us more distinct looks per square mile than almost anywhere else on the South Shore. I've been photographing here across all four seasons and the variety never stops surprising me.

Duxbury Beach is the centerpiece. As one of the longest barrier beaches on the East Coast — stretching nearly four miles — it offers an unobstructed Atlantic horizon that creates truly expansive, dramatic portraits. There's a different energy here than at the more crowded beaches further north: quieter, more open, with wind-sculpted dunes that add texture and scale. Senior portraits and family sessions on Duxbury Beach at golden hour are among the most striking work I do.

Powder Point Bridge — the long wooden pedestrian bridge that leads from the mainland out toward the beach — is one of the most photogenic man-made structures on the South Shore. Its perspective lines draw the eye naturally and create depth in portraits that a flat beach backdrop simply cannot. Kingston Bay offers calmer, sheltered water views with beautiful sunset light on the western shore — a great alternative for clients who want the water backdrop without the open-ocean exposure.

I photograph all services in Duxbury: headshots, senior portraits, branding photography, family portraits, maternity sessions, birthday photoshoots, and event coverage. If you have a private property in Duxbury with a pond, field, or garden you love, I'm happy to work with that too.

Worth the drive — in both directions.

My studio at 83 E Water St in Rockland is about 25 minutes from Duxbury — a straightforward drive for clients who want a controlled indoor setup for headshots or corporate portraits. The studio has natural window light and multiple backdrop options that work well for any professional or personal session.

That said, for most Duxbury clients, the pull of the beach and the bay is the whole point. There's a reason people live in Duxbury — and capturing that landscape as the backdrop for your portraits creates something genuinely personal and specific to where you are.

Duxbury portrait sessions — your questions answered.

Do you travel to Duxbury for sessions?

Yes. I travel to Duxbury regularly for on-location portrait sessions. Duxbury Beach and Powder Point Bridge are two of my favorite shooting spots on the entire South Shore. My studio in Rockland is about 25 minutes away if you'd prefer an indoor session.

What locations do you recommend in Duxbury?

Duxbury Beach is the standout — as one of the longest barrier beaches on the East Coast, it gives you an expansive, unobstructed horizon that's hard to find anywhere else in Massachusetts. Powder Point Bridge is a classic backdrop for senior portraits and branding sessions. Kingston Bay provides calmer water views and beautiful sunset light. North Hill Marsh also offers quieter, more intimate settings for family and maternity sessions.

How much does a portrait session in Duxbury cost?

On-location portrait sessions start at $495. That includes a pre-session consultation, a 30-minute shoot at your chosen Duxbury location, and 3 fully retouched images delivered within 2 weeks. Custom quotes are available for family sessions, senior portrait packages, and branding projects. Duxbury Beach sessions are best timed around a low or incoming tide — I check the tide chart for your date and build the session window around the best conditions.

Is there a parking fee at Duxbury Beach?

Yes — Duxbury Beach charges seasonal parking fees for non-residents from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Day passes are available at the gatehouse. Off-season access in fall and spring is generally free, and the beach is far less crowded — which often makes it the better choice for portrait sessions anyway. For sunrise or early morning sessions, I arrive and get set up before the gate opens. I factor parking and seasonal access into every Duxbury session plan.
