South Shore Senior Portraits — Class of 2027
South Shore senior portraits by Chris McCarthy at South Shore Photography — a full-time portrait photographer working across 20+ Massachusetts towns since 2014, with 500+ completed senior sessions and a 5.0 Google rating. Outdoor sessions at Duxbury Beach, World's End in Hingham, Scituate Lighthouse, Wompatuck State Park, and Wollaston Beach, plus clean-background studio sessions in Rockland. Each session includes 2–6 outfit changes, 1–2 locations, and 20–50 fully edited digital images delivered within 2–3 weeks. Packages: Bronze $1,500, Silver $2,000 (most popular), Gold $2,800. Peak fall season fills 4–6 weeks ahead.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Your senior portraits should capture who you actually are — your personality, your style, and everything you've become. Not just a backdrop and a posed smile. (New to all of this? Here’s what a senior portrait actually is.)
Looking for the right photographer for senior portraits on the South Shore? On-location sessions across the region — beach sessions in Scituate, Marshfield, Duxbury, and Cohasset; harbor and downtown senior pictures in Hingham, Plymouth, Quincy, and Weymouth; wooded and open-field looks in Norwell and Hanover — plus clean-background studio work at our Rockland studio when a senior wants both.

THE EXPERIENCE
How does a senior portrait session work, start to finish?
Every senior session starts with a planning call a week or two before shoot day. We talk through location options, nail down your outfit lineup, and discuss the overall look and feel you're going for. I scout locations in advance when needed — I know where the light hits Hingham Harbor in the late afternoon and which trails at Wompatuck stay open and photogenic through fall. That homework happens before you ever show up.
On the day of the session, we typically schedule around golden hour — the hour before sunset — because that warm, directional light is genuinely flattering in a way that midday sun simply isn't. For seniors who are a little nervous or camera-shy, I start with movement: walking, laughing with a parent or friend, interacting with the environment. The best portraits come when you've forgotten I'm there. For outgoing seniors who want more editorial looks, we lean into it with confident, directed poses that reflect their personality. (For seniors who want to know what kinds of poses we’ll work through, here are pose ideas that work for non-models.)
Studio sessions at our Rockland location offer a completely different feel — clean, dramatic lighting with more wardrobe flexibility. Many seniors do one outdoor location and one quick round at the Rockland studio to get the full range. The South Shore's natural landscapes give your portraits a sense of place that a painted backdrop simply can't replicate — and families consistently tell us those are the images they treasure most.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about senior portrait sessions on the South Shore
What should I wear for senior pictures?
Wear what feels authentic to you — that comes through in the photos more than any trend. For outdoor South Shore sessions, soft neutral colors (cream, dusty blue, sage, oatmeal, warm white) photograph beautifully against coastal and woodland backdrops. Bring 2–3 outfits with different vibes: one polished (dress, blazer, button-down), one casual (jeans + a favorite top, athletic-leisure), and one personality-driven (band tee, school colors, varsity jacket, an interest piece). Layers — denim jackets, cardigans, scarves — add visual depth and let us adjust as the light changes. Comfortable shoes matter; you will walk between locations. Full outfit planning happens in the pre-session consultation.
How many outfits do you wear for senior pictures?
Most senior portrait sessions include 2 to 6 outfit changes depending on session length. A 1-hour Bronze session typically covers 2 outfits at 1 location. A 1.5-hour Silver session covers 4 outfits at 2 locations. A 2-hour Gold session covers 6 outfits at 2 locations. The most-loved mix is one polished look (dress, blazer, or button-down), one casual everyday look (jeans + favorite top, athletic-leisure), and one personality-driven look (band tee, sports uniform, a piece that reflects a hobby). We map the full lineup during the pre-session planning consultation so changing between looks stays fast and the session pace stays relaxed.
Do you have to wear a dress for senior photos?
Absolutely not. Senior portraits work beautifully with jeans, jumpsuits, athletic gear, suits, blazers, vintage finds, or anything else that reflects who you are. Roughly half of the senior girls I photograph on the South Shore wear at least one non-dress outfit — jeans plus a fitted top is one of the most-requested looks in my galleries — and many seniors do an entire session without a dress at all. The goal is that the outfit feels like you. If a dress is not part of your everyday style, that disconnect will show in the photos. Pick clothes you would genuinely choose to wear out, not what you think a senior portrait 'should' look like.
What should I NOT wear for senior portraits?
Avoid these consistent problem categories on South Shore sessions: (1) Neon colors (highlighter yellow, lime green, neon pink, neon orange) cast colored reflections onto skin and look unnatural in coastal light. (2) Tiny patterns or moiré-prone fabrics — fine pinstripes, herringbone, tight checks — can interact with the camera sensor and create distracting waves. (3) Large brand logos and graphic tees that will date the images quickly. (4) Wrinkled clothing — iron the night before and bring a portable steamer for outfit changes. (5) Brand-new shoes that have not been broken in. (6) Anything you are uncomfortable in. Discomfort always shows in portraits, no matter how good the outfit looks on the hanger.
What colors don't photograph well for senior pictures?
Bright neons are the worst offenders — highlighter yellow, neon orange, neon pink, and lime green cast colored reflections onto skin and look harsh in outdoor coastal light. Pure white can blow out in bright sun and lose detail; cream or soft off-white photographs more gracefully. Pure black absorbs light and reads harsh against soft natural backdrops; charcoal, deep navy, or warm browns photograph richer. Bright primary red is unforgiving — it reflects everywhere and competes for visual attention. For South Shore outdoor senior sessions, soft neutrals — sage, dusty blue, blush, oatmeal, warm gray, terracotta — photograph beautifully in every season and complement natural light at every time of day.
What is the average cost of senior portraits in Massachusetts?
Senior portrait sessions in Massachusetts typically range from $400 (basic mini sessions) to $3,000+ (full-service experiences with multiple outfits, multiple locations, and printed products included). South Shore Photography packages run from $1,500 (Bronze — 1 hour, 2 outfits, 20 images, heirloom album) to $2,800 (Gold — 2 hours, 6 outfits, 2 locations, 50 images, album, print credit, mini-session). Most full-service portrait photographers serving the South Shore charge between $1,200 and $2,500 for a senior session that includes a planning consultation, hand-edited images, and a printed product. For a deeper breakdown of what drives pricing across MA, see the 2026 Massachusetts senior portrait price guide at /blog/how-much-do-senior-portraits-cost-massachusetts/.
When should senior photos be taken?
Most senior portraits on the South Shore are photographed between July and October, with August through October being peak season for the visual reasons that matter most: golden hour stretches into the early evening, foliage colors hit their richest tones in late September through mid-October, and beach crowds have cleared after Labor Day. Many seniors photograph in summer before senior year begins so yearbook deadlines and college application timelines are not a stressor. Senior portrait galleries are typically best delivered before October or November for yearbook submission. Book 4–6 weeks in advance for fall — peak weekends in September and October fill first.
When should I book my senior portrait session?
We recommend booking 4–6 weeks in advance at minimum — and earlier if you're planning a fall session. September and October are our most popular months for senior portraits on the South Shore because the light is golden, the foliage is at peak color, and outdoor locations like World's End and Bare Cove Park look extraordinary. Fall dates fill up quickly, sometimes months ahead. Summer morning sessions — scheduled before 9 a.m. to avoid harsh midday light — also book fast for the class of seniors who want their images before school starts. If you have a specific date or location in mind, reach out to South Shore Photography in Rockland as soon as possible to check availability. Rush bookings can sometimes be accommodated with less notice depending on the season.
How long until I receive my senior portrait gallery?
Most senior galleries are delivered within 2–3 weeks of your session. Sneak-peek images — usually 3–5 favorites you can share immediately — go out within 24–48 hours after the shoot, so you have something to post while the full gallery is being edited. Each image in the final gallery is individually color-graded, retouched for skin and stray hair, and finished to a consistent look across the set. If you need a faster turnaround for a yearbook submission, college application portfolio, or graduation announcement, let me know during the consultation and we can prioritize delivery — same-week turnaround is possible when scheduling allows.
What happens if it rains on my session day?
We reschedule at no charge — and the back-up date is held the same way the original was. South Shore weather can change quickly, so I watch the forecast closely starting 48 hours before every senior session. If radar looks unsafe, I'll reach out to discuss whether to move the session, shift to an indoor studio plan at the Rockland studio, or wait it out. Light overcast and even gentle drizzle can actually produce stunning portraits — soft, even light with no harsh shadows — so I don't cancel for anything except real weather. Decisions are always made together, never on top of you.
Do you offer payment plans for senior portrait packages?
Yes — every senior portrait package can be split into a deposit + payment plan. The standard plan is one-third at booking, one-third on session day, and the final third before gallery delivery, but I can adjust to a 4 or 5-payment schedule if that works better for your family. The goal is to make a meaningful senior portrait experience accessible without compromising the quality of the session or the package. Talk to me about it during the consultation — there is no judgment on this and never has been. For context on how senior portrait pricing actually works across Massachusetts and what drives the spread, see the 2026 Massachusetts senior portrait price guide at /blog/how-much-do-senior-portraits-cost-massachusetts/.
Can I do senior portraits at the beach in fall?
Absolutely — fall beach senior sessions are some of the most beautiful work I do on the South Shore. Once Labor Day passes, the crowds disappear from Scituate, Duxbury, and Nantasket Beach, leaving wide-open shoreline and that particular quality of late-day light reflecting off the water. Fall beach sessions tend to combine warmer wardrobe (sweaters, denim jackets, scarves) with bare-foot or boot looks at the water's edge, and the resulting images have a tone you can't replicate in summer. October weekends in particular are gorgeous and significantly easier to shoot at than July or August. Book early — fall coastal slots are the first to fill.
Can I bring a friend or parent to my senior session?
Absolutely. Many seniors bring a parent to the planning consultation and keep them nearby during the session for moral support — especially for seniors who are a little camera-shy at the start. Parents are welcome to watch from a comfortable distance without hovering over the session, which keeps the energy relaxed. Friends are also welcome to come along — having a familiar face nearby can help seniors loosen up and be more natural in front of the camera. We can even shoot a few frames together if you'd like; sibling or friend portraits alongside your senior session can be a nice bonus. The key is that the session stays focused on you — we just want to make sure you're as comfortable as possible from the moment you arrive at our Rockland studio or on-location.
How many outfit changes can I do for senior portraits?
Most senior portrait sessions include 2–6 outfit changes depending on the package you choose. The Bronze package includes 2 outfits at 1 location, the Silver includes 4 outfits at 2 locations, and the Gold includes 6 outfits at 2 locations. We plan the full outfit lineup during your pre-session consultation so you know exactly what to bring on shoot day and how to sequence your looks. Outfit changes are built into the session timing — we factor in the time needed to change between looks so the pace stays comfortable. If you want to mix studio and outdoor looks, we incorporate both into the plan. More outfits mean more variety in your final gallery, which is why families who want a range of images for different purposes tend to choose the Silver or Gold package.
Can I bring a pet, my car, or sports gear to my senior session?
Yes — and please do. Senior portraits should reflect the senior, and the personal-meaning props are often what make the gallery memorable a decade later. I've photographed seniors with horses, with their first car, in full lacrosse and hockey gear, with instruments, in robotics-team jackets, with siblings and pets — every one of those sessions produced images the family treasured more than the polished posed shots. We talk through your interests, sports, hobbies, and any items you want included during the consultation and plan a session that incorporates them naturally rather than as awkward add-ons.
What locations do you use for senior portraits on the South Shore?
We have a deep familiarity with South Shore locations and choose based on your personality, aesthetic, and the time of year. Favorites include World's End in Hingham for its open meadows and harbor views, Bare Cove Park for wooded trails and natural light, Hingham Harbor for waterfront backdrops, Scituate Beach for open sky and shoreline, Wompatuck State Park for lush, forested scenery, and Duxbury Beach for wide-open coastal light. We also use locations in and around Rockland that offer variety without a long drive. During your planning consultation, we'll look at your style and the look you're going for — editorial, natural, athletic, artistic — and recommend the location or combination of locations that fits best. We scout locations in advance so we know exactly where the light lands at your scheduled time.
Do you photograph senior twins or best-friend senior sessions?
Yes — twin senior sessions and best-friend senior sessions are some of my favorite work. Twins typically split the time across both seniors with individual portraits for each plus a set of paired images, and the package math is straightforward (Silver and Gold both work well for twin sessions; Bronze works for tighter sessions with one location). Best-friend sessions usually book as two separate Silver or Gold packages with a shared location and time block — you each get your own full gallery, plus a curated set of friendship portraits delivered to both of you. Reach out and we'll talk through what fits your situation.
