Portrait Photography Across the South Shore

Most people pick a town before they pick a setting, and that is usually backwards. The South Shore gives you four genuinely different looks within a twenty-minute drive of each other, and the one you want depends far more on the feel you are after than on which town line you happen to live inside.

Open coastline — Duxbury Beach, Nantasket in Hull, Peggotty and Sand Hills in Scituate — gives you sky, horizon, and dune grass. It photographs best in the last ninety minutes before sunset, when the light comes in sideways and the sand stops reflecting glare. Worth knowing: these beaches have real tide swings, and a spot that is wide open at low tide can be a narrow strip three hours later. We check the tide chart before locking a start time.

Harbors and working waterfront — Scituate Harbor, Hingham Harbor, Cohasset Village — bring boats, pilings, and stone into the frame. These are the strongest choice for on-location headshots and branding work, because the background says something specific about where you do business instead of reading as generic backdrop.

Woodland and conservation land — Wompatuck State Park, Norwell Town Forest, Bare Cove Park, Stetson Meadows — gives soft, even light that holds up through the middle of the day. This is the reliable option when the schedule will not bend to golden hour, which is often the case with young children and with large extended-family groups.

Fields and open meadow — World's End in Hingham, Weir River Farm, the drumlins above Hingham Harbor — sit somewhere between the other three: warm backlight, tall grass, and long sightlines without the wind and glare of open beach.

Season matters as much as setting. Late September through the end of October is the busiest stretch of the year here for good reason: the light angle is low, the marsh grass turns gold, and the crowds have gone. Spring runs a close second, with leaf-out in May producing the greenest backgrounds of the year. Winter beach sessions are genuinely good when the sky cooperates, and the whole coastline is empty. Midsummer is the hardest to shoot well, which is why we push those sessions toward the edges of the day.
