SCITUATE, MA
I'm Chris McCarthy, a portrait photographer based in Rockland. Scituate's harbor, beaches, and coastline make it one of the most photogenic towns on the South Shore — and I've been shooting here long enough to know exactly where the light is best.

SESSIONS IN SCITUATE
Scituate is one of those towns where almost any spot you point a camera looks like a postcard. The working harbor, the long stretches of open beach, the rocky bluffs — there's a genuine variety of backdrops here, and I've spent years learning how each one behaves in different seasons and light conditions.
Scituate Harbor is a perennial favorite for senior portraits, branding sessions, and headshots with a coastal feel. The lighthouse at the harbor mouth gives you an instantly recognizable backdrop, and the colorful lobster boats add a layer of authentic character that you simply don't find anywhere else. Early morning sessions here are especially striking — the water is still, the light is warm, and the harbor is quiet before the day starts.
Sand Hills Beach (Scituate Beach) gives us wide, open compositions with the Atlantic horizon behind you — perfect for dramatic senior portraits or large family group shots. Third Cliff offers elevated coastal views and a rugged feel that works especially well for branding and editorial-style portraits. Minot Beach is quieter and more protected, making it a top choice for maternity sessions and younger family portraits where you want the beach backdrop without navigating crowds.
I photograph all services in Scituate: headshots, senior portraits, branding photography, family portraits, maternity sessions, birthday photoshoots, and event coverage. I know every parking area, every trail head, and every tide table for this stretch of coast.
STUDIO OR ON-LOCATION
My studio at 83 E Water St in Rockland is about 20 minutes from Scituate — a reasonable drive for clients who want a controlled indoor environment. Studio sessions work well for headshots, corporate portraits, and maternity sessions where lighting consistency matters most.
But with Scituate's coastline at your doorstep, most clients here choose to shoot on-location. The harbor and beaches give us something a studio simply can't replicate — the real texture of where you live and what you love about this place.
POPULAR SCITUATE LOCATIONS
FAQ
Absolutely. I travel to Scituate regularly for on-location sessions. Whether we shoot at the harbor, along Sand Hills Beach, or anywhere else in town, I'll bring everything needed for a great session. My studio in Rockland is also just a 20-minute drive if you prefer an indoor setup.
Scituate Harbor is my top recommendation — the boats, the lighthouse, and the rocky shoreline create a backdrop that's both classic New England and genuinely beautiful. Sand Hills Beach works well for wide, open shots with the Atlantic as your backdrop. Third Cliff gives you dramatic coastal bluffs, and Minot Beach offers a quieter stretch of sand that's ideal for families and maternity sessions at low tide.
On-location portrait sessions start at $495. That includes a pre-session consultation, a 30-minute shoot at your chosen Scituate location, and 3 fully retouched images delivered within 2 weeks. Custom quotes are available for larger packages, family sessions, and branding projects. Harbor and beach sessions here are timed to the last 90 minutes before sunset — I factor tide timing and the golden-hour window into the booking plan at no extra cost.
The two hours before sunset are the best window for sessions in Scituate — particularly at the harbor and along the beach. Evening sessions in summer give you warm amber light with the lighthouse as a backdrop. For beach sessions, I pay close attention to tide timing: a low or incoming tide gives you more open sand and better reflections than high tide, which pushes everything up against the dune line. Morning sessions are a strong alternative for clients who need earlier availability — still water and soft directional light before the lobster boats head out.
