Fall Mini Sessions on the South Shore

South Shore Photography, based in Rockland, MA, serves families across Hingham, Scituate, Norwell, Duxbury, Marshfield, Cohasset, Hanover, Weymouth, and Plymouth. Every fall, photographer Chris McCarthy offers a limited number of mini session slots at three curated South Shore locations — here is everything you need to know about what they are, who they're right for, and how to get a spot before they're gone.

Every fall I get the same message, usually in late September: “I know it's last minute, but do you have anything open?” Sometimes I do, and sometimes I don't — but the families who ask in August are the ones who actually get their holiday card photos done. Fall mini sessions exist precisely to solve this problem. They're shorter, more focused, and more affordable than a full session, but they deliver the same South Shore fall light and the same professional quality. If you've been putting off booking a portrait session all year, a mini session is the on-ramp you've been waiting for.

What Is a Fall Mini Session (and How Is It Different From a Full Session)?

A mini session is a shorter, more focused portrait session — typically 20 to 30 minutes at a single curated location, delivering 15 to 20 fully retouched images. Compare that to a full portrait session, which runs 60 to 90 minutes, covers two or three locations, and delivers 40 to 60 images. The format is different; the quality is not.

I want to be direct about something: a mini session is not a rushed or discounted experience. Every image I deliver from a mini session goes through the same editing process as a full session — the same color grading, the same skin retouching, the same attention to detail. What changes is the scope, not the standard. You get fewer images and one location instead of several. That's the trade-off, and for many families it's a completely sensible one.

Mini sessions are structured as group booking events — I set aside a half-day at one location and run back-to-back slots. That efficiency is what keeps the price point accessible. A full custom session at any location you choose at any time is a different product, and it's priced differently. Mini sessions are curated, scheduled, and streamlined by design.

Who are mini sessions best for? In my experience, they work exceptionally well for families who want annual holiday card photos and don't need an extensive gallery, smaller family groups with one or two kids, seniors who already have a full session gallery but want a set of fall foliage images, and returning clients who simply want a seasonal update rather than a full portrait investment. If you're booking your first-ever family portrait session and have a large extended family with multiple generations, a full session will serve you better. But for the annual update? Mini sessions are exactly right.

2026 Fall Mini Session Locations

I select mini session locations carefully — they need to deliver reliably beautiful fall light across a range of times during the golden hour window, handle back-to-back sessions without feeling crowded, and give families a genuine sense of South Shore character. For fall 2026, I'm offering three locations.

Duxbury Beach / Powder Point Bridge. This is my coastal choice for fall mini sessions, and it's spectacular in October. The open dune grass along the Powder Point corridor goes a rich amber as the season turns, and the coastal light at golden hour is unlike anything you'll find inland. The long, flat approach to the bridge gives a strong sense of place — this is unmistakably the South Shore — and the open sky means gorgeous, directional light for the full session window. For families who want “fall by the ocean,” this is the location.

Hingham Harbor / World's End approach. The approach road to World's End, with the harbor visible in the background and the turning maples lining the path, is one of the most classically South Shore fall settings I know. It reads immediately as “New England autumn” — harbor water, turning trees, soft light coming off the water — without being cliché. It's also reliably beautiful across a wide window of October dates, which matters when I'm scheduling multiple back-to-back slots.

Norwell Town Forest. For families who want full immersion in fall foliage rather than a coastal setting, the Town Forest delivers a canopy of turning maples and oaks along the forested trails that is genuinely breathtaking at peak color. The light filtering through the canopy creates a warm, dappled quality that is nearly impossible to replicate in post-production — it has to be captured in real time, in the right place, in the right two-week window. This location rewards families who want rich woodland color rather than open sky.

Each location has its own character and ideal client profile. When you book, you select which location you prefer — I'll guide you if you're unsure which is the better fit for your family.

Dates, Pricing, and What Is Included

Fall 2026 mini sessions run across September and October, with exact dates announced in August. I structure the schedule around peak foliage windows at each location — Norwell Town Forest typically peaks slightly earlier than the coastal locations, so the date blocks are staggered accordingly.

Price: $295 per slot. That covers everything: the session itself, all professional editing, and delivery of 15 or more final images in an online gallery within seven days of your session. There are no hidden fees, no additional editing charges, and no upsell for the gallery access. What you book is what you get.

Booking requires a deposit to hold your slot, with the full balance due before your session date. Slots are not held without a deposit — this is how I keep the schedule clean and ensure families are committed to their date. Rescheduling is available in the event of weather, though I ask for as much notice as possible.

To summarize what is included in a fall mini session:

  • 20-minute on-location portrait session at your chosen South Shore location
  • 15+ fully retouched images delivered in a private online gallery
  • Gallery delivery within 7 days of your session
  • Pre-session wardrobe and preparation guide
  • Digital download of all delivered images — full resolution, print-ready

Who Books Fall Mini Sessions?

Over the years I've noticed some clear patterns in who reaches out for mini sessions versus full sessions, and it's worth being specific because it helps families self-select accurately.

Families planning holiday cards. This is the single biggest category. Fall mini sessions are timed precisely for the holiday card market — sessions in September and October mean your images are ready well before any reasonable card-ordering deadline. Families who send photo cards every year and just need that one great updated image are the ideal mini session client.

Seniors who want a fall foliage set. Many seniors book a full portrait session in the spring for caps-and-gowns and formal looks, then come back in fall specifically for the foliage images. The mini session format is perfect for this — they already have a full gallery, they know what to expect, and they just want 15 or 20 stunning fall images to round out the collection.

Working parents with limited time. A 20-minute session is genuinely manageable even for families running on a tight schedule. I've had parents arrive straight from work, kids change in the car, and we've produced beautiful images in the available window. The brevity is a feature, not a limitation, for families who would otherwise never find the time.

Grandparents wanting updated portraits with grandchildren. Multi-generational portraits are a wonderful use of the mini session format. A grandparent with two or three grandchildren, one solid location, 20 minutes of focused shooting — it produces exactly the kind of image that gets framed and stays on the wall for decades. These sessions tend to be genuinely moving, and they deliver something no amount of iPhone photos can replicate.

Anyone who has been putting it off. This is the most honest category. Fall mini sessions lower the barrier to entry — lower price, lower time commitment, lower logistical complexity. If you've been meaning to book a family portrait session for the past two or three years and haven't pulled the trigger, a mini session is the version of this experience that actually fits your life right now. Start here. You can always book a full session in the spring once you see what's possible.

How to Book a Fall Mini Session

Mini session dates for fall 2026 open in August. The best thing you can do right now is get on the notification list — I send an announcement to that list before I post publicly, which gives you the first shot at the available slots. In 2025, every mini session slot sold out within 72 hours of opening. The families who got in were almost entirely people who had been on the list since spring.

When slots open, booking is straightforward: choose your preferred location, select an available date and time, pay the deposit to confirm. That's it. You'll receive a confirmation with your pre-session guide shortly after booking.

What to bring and how to prepare: Coordinate your outfits in advance — neutral tones and earthy palettes work best against fall foliage (more on this in the FAQ below). Arrive five minutes before your slot rather than exactly on time; it takes a minute or two to settle in and I want the full 20 minutes to be productive shooting time, not transition time. If you have young children, avoid scheduling right before nap time. A well-rested toddler and a tired one are entirely different subjects to photograph.

If you're on the fence about whether a mini session or a full session is the right fit, browse the family portrait session page and the senior portraits page for more detail on what full sessions include. The locations page also has more detail on each South Shore area where I work regularly.

What should we wear to a fall mini session?

Coordinate in a palette of muted, earthy tones — deep burgundy, forest green, navy, cream, and camel work beautifully against fall foliage. Avoid matching everyone identically; coordinate within a palette instead. Bring layers — New England fall weather can be warm or cool depending on the day.

“Mini sessions work best when you come with a clear, simple goal — the holiday card photo, the annual update, the one great image you want framed. Clarity of purpose makes a 20-minute session feel like more than enough time.”
