Portrait Photographer in Plymouth, MA

I'm Chris McCarthy, a portrait photographer based in Rockland and one of the most-booked Plymouth photographers on the South Shore. I photograph families, seniors, professionals, and small business owners in Plymouth and throughout the South Shore — at the barrier beaches, historic waterfront parks, and pine forests that make Plymouth such a distinctive place to shoot.

What we can create together in Plymouth.

Plymouth is the southernmost town I shoot in regularly, and it's one of the most versatile. Nowhere else on the South Shore can you move between open Atlantic barrier beach, quiet pine forest, and a charming historic waterfront within a few miles. That range — and Plymouth's famously long stretches of uninterrupted coastline — makes it exceptional for portrait photography.

Plymouth Long Beach is the standout choice for most sessions. The barrier beach runs nearly three miles, giving us space to find isolation even on busy days. Dune grass, beach rose, and open water create a backdrop that's simultaneously wild and refined — perfect for senior portraits, family sessions, and maternity photography. The walk out to the tip of the beach at golden hour is one of the best light situations on the entire South Shore. It's one of the beaches I cover in my South Shore beach photography guide.

Brewster Gardens in downtown Plymouth offers a completely different feel — intimate, lush, and historic. The park follows Town Brook through the center of Plymouth with stone paths, mature trees, and glimpses of Plymouth Harbor. It photographs beautifully for headshots and branding sessions where you want a polished, classic New England backdrop without beach wind.

Myles Standish State Forest is the choice for lush, shaded woodland portraits. Pine canopy, kettle ponds, and quiet forest roads give us filtered, even light that's especially flattering in summer and spectacular with fall color in October. White Horse Beach in Manomet is a quieter residential beach with excellent light at golden hour and fewer crowds than Long Beach.

I photograph all services in Plymouth: headshots, senior portraits, family portraits, branding photography, maternity sessions, birthday photoshoots, and event coverage. If you have a specific spot in mind — a waterfront property, a favorite trail, the historic downtown — I'm happy to work with it.

Plymouth is the edge of my range — and worth every mile.

My studio at 83 E Water Street in Rockland is about 20 minutes from Plymouth center — a straightforward drive on Route 3A or Route 3. Studio sessions are available for clients who want a controlled indoor setting with natural window light, seamless backdrops, and full equipment setup. It's a great option for executive headshots or maternity portraits where a clean, elegant look is the priority.

For most Plymouth clients, on-location is the clear choice. The scenery here is genuinely hard to replicate anywhere else — if you have Plymouth Long Beach or Myles Standish State Forest in your backyard, we should use it.

Plymouth portrait sessions — your questions answered.

Do you travel to Plymouth for sessions?

Yes. I travel to Plymouth regularly for on-location portrait sessions. Whether you want to shoot at Plymouth Long Beach, Brewster Gardens, Myles Standish State Forest, or the Plymouth waterfront, I come to you. My studio in Rockland is also about 20 minutes away if you prefer an indoor setting.

What are the best locations in Plymouth for portraits?

Plymouth Long Beach is the top choice for open coastal portraits — wide barrier beach, dune grass, and Atlantic views that work beautifully for senior portraits and family sessions at any time of year. Brewster Gardens offers a quieter waterfront setting with historic architecture as a backdrop. Myles Standish State Forest provides shaded pine trails and kettle ponds perfect for summer portraits and fall color. White Horse Beach in Manomet is a quieter residential beach that photographs especially well at golden hour.

How much does a portrait session in Plymouth cost?

On-location portrait sessions start at $495. That includes a pre-session consultation, a 30-minute shoot at the location of your choice in Plymouth, and 3 fully retouched images delivered within 2 weeks. Larger packages and specialty sessions are available — reach out for a custom quote.

Is Plymouth Long Beach good for senior portraits year-round?

Yes, with some seasonal considerations. Spring and fall are the easiest — mild temperatures, low crowds, and beautiful light. Summer sessions work well in the early morning or two hours before sunset to avoid harsh midday sun and beach crowds. Winter sessions are possible on clear days and produce a dramatic, moody aesthetic that a lot of seniors love. I book Plymouth Long Beach sessions year-round and plan timing around light and tide.
