WHITMAN, MA
Portrait Photographer in Whitman, MA
I'm Chris McCarthy, a portrait photographer based in Rockland. Whitman is a small town between Abington and East Bridgewater that's easy to overlook in South Shore photography — but for clients based there, I'm happy to come to you. My Rockland studio is about 15 minutes away, and the conservation land and ponds in and around Whitman give us workable outdoor portrait settings without a long drive.

SESSIONS IN WHITMAN
What we can create together in Whitman.
Hobart's Pond on the Whitman/Abington border is the best local outdoor option — a quiet kettle pond with a wooded shoreline and conservation access from Plymouth Street. The pond is calm and reflective, with mature pines and oaks that turn cathedral-like in the late afternoon. It's especially good for family portraits and senior sessions where you want a peaceful, intimate setting rather than a beach or harbor backdrop.
Whitman Town Park on Park Avenue is the town's classic public space — a generous open green with mature shade trees, the Veterans memorial, and the wooden bandstand. The Park is the right call for sessions where you want a polished, traditional New England feel — graduation portraits, anniversary family sessions, and branding photos for local business owners. Late spring through early fall, the light at the western edge of the park near the bandstand is exceptional.
Whitman has a quietly notable place in American history as the birthplace of the chocolate chip cookie — invented at the original Toll House Inn on Bedford Street in 1938. The site itself is now a Wendy's, so it's not really a portrait backdrop, but if your family has Whitman roots it's a genuinely fun aside for a session caption. For a wider range of locations within a 15-minute drive, my studio at 83 E Water Street in Rockland and Ames Nowell State Park in Abington both add a lot of variety to a Whitman-based session day.

FAQ
Whitman portrait sessions — your questions answered.
Do you travel to Whitman for portrait sessions?
Yes. I come to Whitman for on-location portrait sessions, and my studio in Rockland is about 15 minutes away for clients who prefer an indoor setting. Whether you want to shoot at Hobart Pond, a local park, or a private property, I'm happy to work with your preferred location.
What are the best portrait locations near Whitman?
Hobart Pond on the Whitman/Abington border is the top nearby outdoor option — a quiet kettle pond with a wooded shoreline that photographs well in every season. Whitman Town Forest adds wooded trail options. For a wider range of locations, my Rockland studio and the Ames Nowell State Park conservation area in Abington are both 15 minutes away.
How much does a portrait session in Whitman cost?
On-location portrait sessions start at $495. That includes a pre-session consultation, a 30-minute shoot at the location of your choice in Whitman, and 3 fully retouched images delivered within 2 weeks. Larger packages and specialty sessions are available — reach out for a custom quote. The Rockland studio is 15 minutes away — clients in Whitman who want both studio light and an outdoor setting can do a combined session the same day.
Is it worth driving to the studio in Rockland instead of shooting in Whitman?
Whitman is one of the closer South Shore towns to my Rockland studio — about 15 minutes via Route 14 or Route 27. For corporate headshots, executive portraits, and maternity sessions, the controlled studio light typically produces better results than outdoor work. For families, seniors, and branding sessions where the South Shore character is part of the story, on-location at Hobart's Pond, Whitman Town Park, or Whitman Town Forest is the right call. Combined sessions — outdoor first, then studio — are common for clients who want both polished headshot frames and lifestyle environmental portraits in one day.
