Portrait Photographer in Hull, MA
I'm Chris McCarthy, a portrait photographer based in Rockland. Hull is a narrow peninsula that reaches into Boston Harbor — and its geography produces portrait settings that are genuinely one-of-a-kind on the South Shore. Open ocean, harbor views, and city skyline all within a mile of each other.

SESSIONS IN HULL
What we can create together in Hull.
Hull is a place unlike any other on the South Shore. The town is essentially a long, narrow barrier peninsula — ocean on one side, harbor on the other — that juts north into Boston Harbor. That unusual geography means you can stand in one spot and see Boston's skyline, harbor islands, and open Atlantic all at once. For portrait photography, it's a kind of geographic jackpot.
Nantasket Beach stretches nearly three miles along the ocean side of the peninsula — one of the longest beaches on the South Shore and one of the most photogenic. Wide open sand, harbor island silhouettes on the horizon, and reliable golden-hour light from the west over the water. Family sessions and senior portraits photograph exceptionally well here at dusk.
Windmill Point at Hull's southern tip gives us open water on both sides — a narrow spit of land where ocean and harbor converge. It's a dramatic backdrop for senior and branding sessions. Pemberton Point at the northern tip is one of the most unusual portrait locations in the region: the Boston city skyline sits on the horizon behind your subject, creating a coastal-urban composition that simply doesn't exist further south on the Shore.
I photograph all services in Hull: headshots, senior portraits, family portraits, branding photography, maternity sessions, and birthday photoshoots.
STUDIO OR ON-LOCATION
Hull is a drive worth making.
My studio in Rockland is about 25 minutes from Hull. The drive is easy — Route 228 straight to the peninsula. Studio sessions are available for clients who want a controlled indoor setting for headshots or maternity work.
For Hull clients, on-location is almost always the right call. The scenery on the peninsula is among the most dramatic and photogenic on the entire South Shore coast.

COASTAL PORTRAITS
Beach photography across the South Shore.
Nantasket and Pemberton Point are the northern bookends of a coast that stretches all the way to Plymouth. If you want to compare Hull's open Atlantic to the calmer beaches of Cohasset, Scituate, Duxbury, and Humarock, the South Shore beach photography guide is the place to start.

Hull portrait sessions — your questions answered.
Do you travel to Hull for portrait sessions?
Yes. I photograph in Hull regularly — Nantasket Beach, Windmill Point, and Pemberton Point all offer portrait settings genuinely different from any other town on the South Shore. My studio in Rockland is about 25 minutes away if you'd prefer an indoor setting.
What are the best portrait locations in Hull?
Nantasket Beach is the obvious starting point — wide, sweeping, with Boston Harbor islands on the horizon. Windmill Point at the southern tip offers open-water views from both sides simultaneously. Pemberton Point at the northern tip gives you the Boston city skyline in the background — a uniquely urban-coastal portrait backdrop. Hull Village along the harbor side is quieter and more intimate.
How much does a portrait session in Hull cost?
On-location portrait sessions start at $495. That includes a pre-session consultation, a 30-minute shoot at the location of your choice in Hull, and 3 fully retouched images delivered within 2 weeks. Larger packages and specialty sessions are available — reach out for a custom quote. Nantasket Beach and the rocky southern tip of Hull are two distinct looks within walking distance of each other — the full session package gives you time to work both in a single shoot.
What time of day is best for portraits at Nantasket Beach?
Golden hour — the hour before sunset — is the best time. The sun drops toward the west over the bay, wrapping subjects in warm, directional light. Early morning also works and avoids summer crowds. For sessions at Pemberton Point where you want the Boston skyline visible, evening blue hour after sunset produces a dramatic cityscape effect.
