Outdoor engagement sessions at South Shore beaches, harbors, and parks. Natural light, genuine connection — images that look like the two of you.

By Chris McCarthy — Portrait Photographer, South Shore Photography

TL;DR: Outdoor engagement photography on the South Shore of Massachusetts — sessions at Duxbury Beach, Scituate Harbor, World's End in Hingham, and parks across the region. Starting at $450 for a 60-minute session with 40+ edited images, or $550 for a 90-minute extended session at two locations with 60+ images. Every session includes a planning consultation, natural-light photography, and a private online gallery with high-resolution downloads delivered within two weeks. Perfect for save-the-dates, wedding websites, and simply capturing this chapter.

Outdoor engagement session at a South Shore beach

What is included in a South Shore engagement session?

Every engagement session starts with a pre-session conversation about where you want to shoot, what you want the images to feel like, and what you're planning to use them for. If you have a save-the-date deadline, we plan back from it. If you have a specific location in mind — the beach where you got engaged, a park you run together — that's where we go.

Sessions run 60–90 minutes. Long enough to be unhurried and real, short enough that you're not exhausted. Most couples get 1–2 locations and 2–3 wardrobe changes within that time. The goal is images that look genuinely like you — not staged, not stiff, not stock-photo generic.

From inquiry to gallery — what the timeline actually looks like

Most couples book an engagement session 3 to 6 months before their wedding. Here's exactly what happens at each stage so there are no surprises.

  1. DAY 0

    Inquiry

You send a quick note via the contact form with your preferred date range, ceremony date if you have one, and any locations you're drawn to. I respond within 24 hours, usually same-day.

  2. DAYS 1–3

    Discovery call (15 minutes)

A short phone or video call to talk through what you want the images to feel like, what the photos are for (save-the-dates, wedding website, framed prints), and which package fits. No pressure to commit on the call.

  3. DAYS 4–7

    Booking

I send a simple online agreement and a 30% retainer invoice. Once both come back, your date is locked. The remaining balance is due the week before the session.

  4. 2–4 WEEKS BEFORE SESSION

    Pre-session planning

I send a planning questionnaire (location preferences, outfit ideas, any meaningful details like a dog or a specific spot). We finalize one or two locations, the start time based on golden hour for that date, and a backup plan for weather. You get a packing checklist and styling guidance.

  5. DAY BEFORE

    Weather call

I check the forecast and confirm the time and meeting spot by text the night before. If conditions look bad, we reschedule at no charge — usually within the same week.

  6. SESSION DAY

    The shoot itself

Meet at the location, 60 to 90 minutes of shooting at a relaxed pace, one or two locations, and 2 to 3 outfit changes if you brought them. The first 10 minutes are warm-up — by the time we're moving, the camera is invisible.

  7. 5–10 DAYS AFTER

    Sneak-peek previews

You get a small set of 5 to 10 fully edited preview images delivered by email — perfect for an Instagram announcement or save-the-date sketches.

  8. WITHIN 2 WEEKS

    Full gallery delivery

A private online gallery with 40 to 60 fully edited high-resolution images (60+ for the Extended package). You can download originals, share with family, and order prints directly from the gallery. Files are licensed for personal use, social media, and save-the-dates.

Three things South Shore couples notice

No shot list, no posed checklist

Every couple I've worked with says the same thing afterward — they were nervous about posing and surprised by how little of it actually happened. We move, we walk, we talk. The directions are small ("turn toward each other," "look down for a second") and the keepers come from the in-between moments.

Local light, scouted ahead

I've shot at every location on the list above dozens of times. I know exactly when the light hits the ledges at Third Cliff, when Powder Point Bridge backlights without overexposing, and which Wompatuck trail the late afternoon sun reaches. You're not the test run — you're benefitting from work I've already done.

Two-week gallery turnaround, every time

The two-week window isn't aspirational — it's the standard, and it's in the contract. Save-the-dates, wedding-website launches, and seasonal Instagram announcements have deadlines. I work backward from those.

Always such a great experience! Super professional, easy to work with, and the photos always come out gorgeous. Truly one of my favorite photographers to work with!

Engagement photography — your questions answered

When should we schedule our engagement session?

Most couples schedule their engagement session 3–6 months after getting engaged and 3–6 months before the wedding — this gives you time to use the photos for save-the-dates, wedding websites, and invitations. If you have a specific seasonal look in mind (fall foliage at Duxbury, golden summer light at Scituate Harbor, spring bloom at World’s End), book as early as possible since popular outdoor windows fill quickly.

Where do you shoot engagement sessions on the South Shore?

The South Shore has outstanding variety for engagement photography. Duxbury Beach and Powder Point Bridge offer open barrier beach and golden coastal light. Scituate Harbor and Third Cliff give you classic New England fishing village character with rock ledges and harbor views. World’s End in Hingham provides stunning drumlin meadows, carriage paths, and Boston Harbor views. We match location to your aesthetic — tell me what you want the images to feel like, and I’ll recommend the right spot.

How long is an engagement session?

Standard engagement sessions run 60–90 minutes. That’s enough time for one or two locations, 2–3 wardrobe changes if you want variety, and a relaxed pace that doesn’t feel rushed. Most couples receive 40–60 fully edited images delivered in an online gallery within two weeks of the session.

Can we incorporate something meaningful — our dog, a special location, a prop?

Absolutely. Dogs are welcome and honestly make for some of the most joyful engagement images. If there’s a location that means something to your story — the beach where you got engaged, a park you run together, a neighborhood you both love — that context almost always produces better images than a generic scenic backdrop.
