Best Senior Portrait Locations in Scituate and Duxbury, MA

South Shore Photography, based in Rockland, MA, specializes in senior portraits across Scituate, Duxbury, and the surrounding South Shore communities. Photographer Chris McCarthy has photographed senior sessions at nearly every notable outdoor location in both towns — from Scituate Lighthouse to Powder Point Bridge in Duxbury — and this guide covers exactly what makes each spot worth knowing about.
Scituate and Duxbury are two of the most visually rich towns on the entire South Shore, and I consider myself genuinely lucky to work in them as often as I do. Between the rocky lighthouse coastline, the historic harbor, the long barrier beach, the tidal flats, and the wooded conservation land, these two towns offer more location variety within a small geographic area than almost anywhere else I shoot. If you're a senior in this part of the South Shore — or a family willing to drive — these are locations worth planning your session around.
Scituate Lighthouse and the Harbor Jetty
This is the most iconic location in Scituate and one I return to repeatedly because it simply delivers. The Scituate Lighthouse — one of the oldest lighthouses in Massachusetts — sits at the end of a rocky point overlooking the harbor entrance. The jetty rocks, the lighthouse tower, and the open water create a backdrop that reads as distinctly South Shore in a way few other locations can match.
What makes the lighthouse area particularly versatile for senior portrait sessions is the variety within a small area. You have the lighthouse itself for landmark shots, the rocky shoreline for more editorial work, the harbor-facing view with boats for a nautical quality, and the adjacent beach areas for softer coastal light. I can typically get three or four distinct looks within a 10-minute walk without moving the car.
Best timing: Golden hour, 60-90 minutes before sunset. The lighthouse faces west-northwest, which means late afternoon light hits the front of it directly — on clear evenings, the tower glows. Arrive slightly before golden hour to use the softer pre-sunset light and stay through the last warm minutes before the sun drops below the tree line to the west.
Egypt Beach and Minot Beach, Scituate
For seniors who want a classic sandy beach setting without the crowds of the more well-known South Shore beaches, Egypt Beach and Minot Beach in Scituate are consistently excellent. These are neighborhood beaches — less trafficked than Duxbury or Humarock — with a clean, uncluttered look that works beautifully as a portrait background.
Egypt Beach in particular has a wide expanse of sand at low tide with the ocean stretching to the horizon — simple and elegant. The lack of structures or distractions in the background keeps the viewer's attention entirely on the subject. For seniors who want a clean, airy, summery look, this is my top choice in Scituate.
Minot Beach, just to the north, has slightly more rocky character and a view of Minot Light — one of the most photographed lighthouses in New England — in the distance. On clear evenings with the right light, images shot here have a quality that's difficult to replicate anywhere else on the coast.
Humarock Beach and the North River Mouth
Humarock is Scituate's most remote beach community — a narrow barrier spit where the North River meets the ocean — and it has a wild, windswept character that I find irresistible as a photographer. The dune grass, the expansive sky, the tidal river on one side and the ocean on the other, the weathered beach cottages: it all adds up to something that looks genuinely unlike any other location on the South Shore.
I particularly like Humarock for seniors who want something a little different — less polished, more atmospheric. The location rewards a certain comfort with the environment: you're out on a narrow spit of land, the light changes quickly, and the wind is almost always present. But when it comes together, the images have a quality that looks like editorial photography rather than a portrait session.
Practical note: Parking at Humarock requires a Scituate beach sticker during peak season. Plan accordingly or arrive in the shoulder season when restrictions are lighter.
Duxbury Beach and Powder Point Bridge
Duxbury Beach is one of the finest barrier beaches in Massachusetts — a long, narrow spit accessible via the historic Powder Point Bridge, which at nearly 2,200 feet is one of the longest wooden bridges in the United States. The bridge itself is a subject, not just a means of access. Seniors walking the bridge with water on both sides, the beach visible ahead and the harbor behind — that's an image with genuine scale and drama.
Once on the beach, you have essentially unlimited space. The dunes on the bay side are particularly beautiful — tall, vegetated dunes with dune grass that catches golden hour light in a way that creates a soft, glowing backdrop. The ocean side is more exposed and dramatic. Depending on the light and the look we're going for, I'll move between the two sides within the same session.
What to know: Duxbury Beach has a parking fee during the season, and the bridge can get wind. Bring a hair plan for sessions in breezy conditions. I always scout the specific section of beach we'll use before the session starts so we can move efficiently when the light is right.
Bay Farm Conservation Area and the Duxbury Tidal Flats
Less well-known than Duxbury Beach but genuinely exceptional — Bay Farm Conservation Area offers open meadows, salt marsh views, and distant water vistas without the crowds or the parking challenges of the public beach. I use this location primarily in the spring and early fall when the meadow grasses are at their best.
The tidal flats along King Caesar Road in Duxbury are a personal favorite discovery. At low tide, the exposed flats create a mirror-like reflective surface that catches the sky beautifully. Walking out onto the flats at golden hour with the sky reflected below — it looks like something out of Iceland rather than southeastern Massachusetts, and I've produced some of the most distinctive senior portraits of my career at this spot.
Timing is critical here: this location only works within about 90 minutes of low tide. I always check the tide tables before scheduling sessions that include the flats.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best locations for senior portraits in Scituate, MA?
The top Scituate locations are the area around Scituate Lighthouse and the harbor jetty (dramatic rocky coastline, iconic landmark), Egypt Beach and Minot Beach for open sandy stretches with unobstructed ocean views, and Humarock Beach at the mouth of the North River for a wild, remote quality. The Lawson Tower neighborhood adds wooded trails and stone walls for a classic New England feel.
What are the best locations for senior portraits in Duxbury, MA?
Duxbury Beach — the long barrier beach via Powder Point Bridge — is the most dramatic coastal option, with sweeping dune views and the historic bridge as a backdrop. Bay Farm Conservation Area provides open meadows and water views. The tidal flats along King Caesar Road during low tide create a mirror-like reflective surface that produces truly distinctive images.
What time of day is best for senior portraits in Scituate and Duxbury?
Golden hour — the 60-90 minutes before sunset — is consistently the best light at both locations. The low-angle light adds warmth and dimension, and at coastal locations it reflects beautifully off the water, creating natural fill light that makes skin tones glow. I always schedule senior sessions to finish at or just after sunset.
Do I need a permit for senior portraits at Scituate Lighthouse or Duxbury Beach?
For personal portrait sessions, you generally don't need a special permit at most outdoor locations in Scituate and Duxbury. Duxbury Beach has a parking fee during the season. Scituate Lighthouse is on public land and accessible for personal sessions. I stay current on any location-specific requirements and handle logistics before your session.
How far in advance should I book a senior portrait session in Scituate or Duxbury?
Book 6-8 weeks ahead for spring and 8-10 weeks for fall. Golden hour weekend slots in September and October fill quickly — sometimes within days of opening. If you have a specific date in mind, reach out early. Weekday availability is generally more flexible, especially in spring.
LOCATION TIP
“The best senior portrait sessions I've shot in Scituate and Duxbury had one thing in common: we started before the light peaked and stayed past where most people would have stopped. The last 20 minutes of golden hour, when the light turns deep amber and the shadows go long — that's when the really special images happen. Don't be in a hurry to leave.”
