PORTRAIT PLANNING · FAQ GUIDE

South Shore Photography, based in Rockland, MA, offers portrait sessions for families, seniors, newborns, maternity, and engagement couples across Hingham, Scituate, Norwell, Duxbury, Marshfield, Cohasset, Hanover, Weymouth, and Plymouth. One of the most common pre-booking questions photographer Chris McCarthy gets: “How long will our session take?” Here is the honest, detailed answer for every session type.
Session length is something I get asked about constantly, and it makes complete sense — people want to plan their day, arrange babysitters, figure out parking, decide whether to eat beforehand. The honest answer is: it depends on the type of session, your family size, and whether you have small children involved. But I can give you very specific ranges for every service I offer, and explain exactly what drives the variation. After hundreds of sessions across the South Shore, I know where the time goes and why it matters.
Studio headshot sessions run 30 minutes. That is genuinely enough time for a focused, polished professional headshot — you will walk away with 10 fully edited images, multiple expression variations, and potentially a background change. It feels fast because it is efficient, not because it is rushed. We know exactly what we are doing before you arrive, the setup is ready, and the lighting is dialed in. Every minute is working time.
On-location headshot sessions run 45 to 60 minutes because navigating between settings takes time that studio sessions do not require. If you want a mix of a clean wall background, an outdoor courtyard, and a candid environmental look, plan for the full hour. The variety is worth it — you end up with images that work across different platforms and contexts.
Individual professional headshot sessions — the kind used for real estate agent profiles, business websites, and professional directories — typically fall in the 30 to 45-minute window. If you are adding a wardrobe change or need a small group of colleagues photographed alongside your individual shots, add 15 to 20 minutes per person or outfit change.

Standard family sessions run 60 minutes. For families with children under 5, plan for 75 minutes — toddlers and preschoolers set their own pace, and trying to rush them produces exactly the expressions you do not want in your portraits. I build a buffer into every session with young children because the best family images come from moments of genuine connection, not from hurrying through a checklist.
Mini sessions — typically offered in spring and fall — run 45 minutes. They are a great fit for families who want a focused, efficient session with one primary location and one outfit. You get fewer images than a full session but the experience is streamlined and the turnaround is fast.
Multi-generational sessions — where you are bringing grandparents, adult siblings, and multiple family units together — need the full 75 minutes to capture all the different groupings. The permutations add up quickly: whole group together, each nuclear family unit separately, just the grandparents, just the cousins. Factor that in when you book.

Senior portrait sessions are longer than any other portrait type except newborns, and for good reason: seniors typically want multiple outfit changes, a variety of looks ranging from formal to casual, and images at more than one location. That takes time, and the time investment shows in the final gallery.
The Bronze package is a 1-hour session at one location with two outfits. The Silver package runs 1.5 hours at two locations with four outfits. The Gold package is a full 2-hour session at two locations with six outfits. Most seniors who want a complete senior portrait experience — something that covers their yearbook formal, their activity portraits, and a few genuinely casual and personal images — choose Silver or Gold.
One important note: travel time between locations is not included in the session clock. If we are moving from Norwell to Scituate Harbor between looks, budget an extra 10 to 15 minutes for that drive. I always communicate this clearly when booking so there are no surprises on the day.

Maternity sessions typically run 60 minutes. There is no rushing here — we move at whatever pace is comfortable. Late pregnancy means you may need to change positions slowly, take short breaks, and move deliberately between setups. That is completely fine and completely expected. A maternity session is not a sprint.
If you want to combine an outdoor session at one of our South Shore locations with a different indoor or styled look, add 15 minutes to account for the transition and setup. Most families find that one cohesive look in one beautiful location produces a more unified final gallery than trying to do too many different things in a single session.
The optimal booking window for maternity sessions is 28 to 34 weeks — the bump is prominent and beautifully round, but you still have comfortable range of motion. I can accommodate earlier or later depending on how you are feeling, but that window tends to produce the most flattering results.

Newborn sessions are the longest of any portrait type, and the length is entirely by design. We work around the baby — always. Feeding breaks, diaper changes, settling time after a position change, waiting for the baby to drift back into a deep enough sleep to try a new pose — all of that is built into the session time. It is not padding. It is how newborn photography actually works.
Studio newborn sessions run 2.5 to 3 hours. In-home lifestyle newborn sessions — where I come to your South Shore home and document your family in your actual environment — run 2 to 2.5 hours. The in-home sessions move a bit faster because there is no need to transport the baby anywhere, and the environment is already comfortable and familiar.
I have heard from new parents who are surprised by the session length — they imagine a baby sleeping and it feeling quick. The reality is that newborns are unpredictable, and the most beautiful newborn portraits come from patience, not efficiency. Every time I have tried to rush a newborn session, the images suffer. The extra time is not a cost — it is the entire reason the portraits turn out beautiful.

Standard engagement sessions run 60 minutes. Extended engagement sessions — which cover two locations — run 90 minutes. Most couples end up choosing the extended option because the variety in the final gallery is significantly richer. Starting at one location, then moving to a second that has a completely different feel, gives you images that work across your save-the-dates, your wedding website, your invitations, and your social media without everything looking like it came from the same five-minute window.
Engagement sessions are also the place where couples get comfortable in front of the camera. By the time we wrap, you will know my cues, I will know what angles and light work best for you, and both of you will feel relaxed enough to be genuinely yourselves. That comfort transfers directly to your wedding day — couples who do engagement sessions consistently produce better wedding portraits because there is no warm-up period.

Beyond the session type itself, a few variables consistently affect how long a session actually runs. Knowing these in advance lets you plan realistically.
Number of people. Each additional person adds complexity to group setups. A couple is simple. A family of four requires more arrangement. A family of eight with different heights, ages, and energy levels takes considerably more time to position, settle, and photograph well.
Number of locations. Moving between locations — even ones that are close together — takes 10 to 15 minutes of drive time plus setup time at the new spot. If your session involves two locations, budget that travel time on top of the session clock.
Children under 3. This is the single biggest wildcard in any session. A toddler who decides they do not want to cooperate for 15 minutes can add 20 to 30 minutes to a session — not because we are fighting them, but because we are waiting for the right moment to try again. I always build extra buffer into sessions with very young children, and I encourage parents to do the same.
Outfit changes. Each outfit change adds approximately 15 minutes — time to change, adjust, and get settled back into the session rhythm. If you are planning multiple changes, factor that into your timing expectations.
Weather and light conditions. Outdoor sessions on the South Shore occasionally require brief repositioning as clouds move or as the light shifts faster than expected around golden hour. This rarely adds significant time, but it is worth knowing that outdoor sessions have slightly more unpredictability built in than studio sessions.
How long does a family portrait session take with young children?
Family sessions with children under 5 typically run 60–75 minutes. I build buffer time into every session with toddlers because kids set their own pace — the best family portraits come when children are relaxed, not when we're rushing through setups. A family with three children under age 6 should plan for the full 75-minute window.
How long is a newborn photography session?
Newborn sessions run 2–3 hours. That length is not excessive — it reflects how newborn sessions actually work. We feed the baby, wait for settling, shoot in natural windows of calm between feeds, and take every break the baby needs. Rushing a newborn session produces stressed parents and a crying baby. The extra time is what makes newborn portraits beautiful.
How long does a headshot session take?
A studio headshot session runs 30 minutes — enough time for 10 fully edited professional images with multiple expression variations and background changes. On-location headshot sessions run 45–60 minutes to account for navigating between settings. If you are adding an outfit change or a group shot, plan an extra 15–20 minutes.
How long is a senior portrait session?
Senior portrait session length depends on your package. The Bronze package is a 1-hour shoot at 1 location with 2 outfits. The Silver is 1.5 hours at 2 locations with 4 outfits. The Gold is 2 hours at 2 locations with 6 outfits. Travel time between locations is not included in the session clock — plan an extra 10–15 minutes for that.
How long before the session should I arrive?
For studio sessions in Rockland, arriving 5 minutes early is ideal — parking is easy and we can use any extra time to talk through the plan before we start shooting. For outdoor sessions, arriving 10 minutes early lets you get a feel for the location before the session starts. Do not stress about being right on time — I build a small buffer into every booking.
PRO TIP
“The single best thing you can do to keep a session on schedule is a quick pre-session call. Five minutes on the phone the day before — running through the plan, confirming the location, checking on kids' nap schedules — saves 20 minutes of confusion on the day. I do this for every family session.”
