I put the restrictions up front because two of them catch people out. The first is the dog rule — a family dog is welcome at plenty of the places I shoot, and families often assume a farm would be the most dog-friendly of all. It is the opposite: livestock means no dogs, no exceptions.

The second is the animals themselves. People picture a session leaning on a fence with horses behind them, or a toddler meeting a goat. The reality is that the Barnyard runs roughly May through November and opens only for scheduled programs, and no visitor enters a pasture or pen without staff. Animals can absolutely appear across a fence line in the background of your frames — but a portrait session posed among them is not something this property allows, and I would rather say that here than on the day.

What you get is 75 acres of genuinely pastoral landscape that costs you nothing to walk into, and a look that almost nobody else on the South Shore has in their gallery. Weir River Farm is a working Trustees farm of about 75 acres on Turkey Hill — open fields and pasture surrounded by oak and red cedar woodland, with horses, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens and rabbits kept on the land. It sits against nearly 5,000 contiguous acres of protected open space running through Whitney and Thayer Woods, so the horizon stays green in every direction.

The reason to shoot here is contrast. Almost every South Shore portrait ends up coastal — beach, harbor, dune, lighthouse. Beautiful, but if you have lived here a while your family albums start to look the same. Weir River Farm gives you warm, agricultural frames: hay fields at golden hour, weathered fencing, cedar edges, and open hilltop light. Nothing about it reads as beach.

There are three distinct settings inside the property. The open fields descending from the Turkey Hill entrance give wide pastoral frames with long evening light and room for a family to spread out. The Grove is a wooded stretch with an unusually open understory — closer to a British woodland than typical New England scrub — which produces soft, sheltered, green-toned portraits even in harsh midday sun. And the Garden Path through the flowering shrubs inside the Grove is the most intimate spot on the property, good for maternity and couples.

Practically, the trails vary in difficulty. The main footpath from the Turkey Hill entrance descends through fields and woods and involves real walking. There is an easier route near the lower parking lot that works for strollers, limited mobility, or late-pregnancy maternity sessions — I route those sessions there deliberately rather than asking anyone to manage the hill.
