From the wide open sand of Plymouth Long Beach to the forested kettle ponds of Myles Standish State Forest, Plymouth has more portrait variety than almost anywhere else on the South Shore.

FAMILY PORTRAIT LOCATIONS IN PLYMOUTH
Where we shoot in Plymouth.
Plymouth Beach is the most versatile family portrait location in town — a long barrier beach with open shoreline, dune grass, and a distant lighthouse silhouette. It photographs well from late May through October and has enough length that you can find a private stretch even on busy summer days. September and October are my favorite months here — the beach pass requirement lifts after Labor Day, the summer crowds are gone, and the late-season light is warm and low.
Best time of day: 90 minutes before sunset — the open horizon produces a long, warm golden hour. Best season: September–October (no beach pass needed, fewer crowds, best light). Summer works well for early-evening sessions. Access: Flat sand walking. Beach pass required June–Labor Day; free after. Parking at the beach lot.
Brewster Gardens / Town Brook is one of Plymouth's hidden portrait gems — a landscaped park along Town Brook with stone bridges, mature trees, and colonial architecture visible nearby. The park produces images with a classic New England character that you cannot get at a beach. It works especially well for families who want shade, structure, and a relaxed park environment without sand in everyone's shoes.
Best time of day: Late afternoon through golden hour — the mature trees filter the light beautifully. Best season: May for spring blossoms, October for fall foliage along the brook. Access: Flat, paved paths — fully stroller-friendly. Free parking on nearby streets. Walking distance from Plymouth waterfront.
Plymouth Waterfront / Town Wharf gives family portraits an urban-coastal character — the working harbor, Mayflower II in the background, and the waterfront walkway create a distinctly Plymouth atmosphere. This is a strong choice for families who want their South Shore hometown woven into the images rather than a generic beach backdrop.
Myles Standish State Forest is the go-to for families who want a natural, woodland aesthetic rather than coastal imagery. At 16,000 acres, it's the largest public recreation area on the South Shore — pine and oak woodland, kettle ponds (Charge Pond is my favorite for waterside family portraits), and quiet clearings produce a completely different feel. Especially beautiful in late September and October when the foliage turns.
ABOUT THE SESSIONS
Family portraits in Plymouth — history and nature combined.
My studio in Rockland is about 20-25 minutes from Plymouth center via Route 3. I travel to Plymouth for on-location sessions year-round. Families with children of any age — from babies through high schoolers — are welcome, and I keep the pace of every session relaxed enough that even the youngest kids stay comfortable and engaged.
Plymouth's size gives you genuine flexibility: a single session can include a beach and Brewster Gardens for two very different looks, or a beach and a kettle pond at Myles Standish for coastal and woodland in the same afternoon. Or we can spend the full session at one location and go deeper — more groupings, more variety within the same area, more range in the final gallery.
I always check tide tables for Plymouth Beach sessions — a falling tide gives you the widest sand and the best footing, especially for families with toddlers. For Myles Standish sessions, I recommend arriving 2 hours before sunset so we have time to work both the forest interior and the pond shoreline before the light goes. We nail down all of this during the planning consultation.

WHAT TO EXPECT
How a Plymouth family session works.
Every Plymouth family session starts with a planning conversation — we talk through which locations match your family's style, what time of day gives us the best light at those spots, and how to coordinate outfits across the family without everyone wearing matching white shirts. I send a location-specific wardrobe guide after booking.
On session day, we meet at the location and spend 60–90 minutes working through a mix of posed groupings and candid moments. For beach sessions, I bring a blanket for seated poses and build in time for the kids to run along the water — those in-between moments often produce the best images in the gallery. For Brewster Gardens and the waterfront, the session flows more like a walk through the park with frequent stops for portraits.
Your gallery of 40+ fully retouched images is delivered within 2 weeks via a private online gallery. From there, you can download, share, and order prints directly.
Plymouth's variety is what sets it apart from other South Shore towns — in a single session, we can shoot at a barrier beach, a landscaped historic park, a working waterfront, or a 16,000-acre state forest. No other town on the South Shore offers that range within a 15-minute drive.
That variety means your gallery will have genuine visual range, not just 50 variations of the same backdrop. I recommend Plymouth to any family who wants a session that feels like an adventure rather than a chore.
