WHY THIS GUIDE EXISTS
The three things families get wrong about senior portraits
After more than a decade of senior sessions on the South Shore, the same three problems come up again and again — and all of them are solved weeks before anyone picks up a camera. That is what the guide is for.
Booking too late. Families tend to start looking in September, which is already the middle of peak season here. The usable fall window on the South Shore is roughly mid-September through the end of October: after that the leaves are down, the light goes flat, and the coastal wind makes long-hair and dress sessions genuinely difficult. Yearbook deadlines often land in October or November, which compresses things further. Booking in June or July for a fall session is not early — it is on time.
Choosing the location last. Location drives more of the final look than wardrobe, posing, or editing, and it is the one decision most families leave until the week of the shoot. A beach session and a woodland session produce completely different portraits from the same senior in the same outfit. Deciding early also means we can schedule around the tide and the sun angle for that specific spot instead of working around whatever the conditions happen to be.
Over-planning the outfits. Most seniors bring too many pieces and end up rushed. Two well-chosen outfits shot properly beat four rushed ones every time, and the guide's checklist is built around that — what actually photographs well in coastal light, what fabrics survive wind off the water, and which colors fight with the South Shore's autumn palette.
