SENIOR PORTRAIT LOCATIONS IN ABINGTON
Where we shoot in Abington.
Island Grove Park
Island Grove is Abington's most versatile senior portrait location. The park has a wooded pond shoreline, open meadow areas, walking paths, and a playground that keeps younger siblings occupied if they're tagging along. What makes it work for portraits is the pond — the reflections at golden hour create layered compositions with real depth, and the surrounding fall foliage in October is excellent. The open fields give us a completely different look: clean, bright, lifestyle-magazine-style frames that work for sports gear or musical instrument features.
Best time of day: 1.5 hours before sunset for the pond shoreline — the water catches warm reflected light beautifully. The open meadow works well from mid-afternoon through golden hour. Morning sessions are quieter and produce cooler-toned, editorial-feeling images.
Best season: September through mid-October for fall foliage around the pond. May through June for fresh green growth and spring wildflowers in the meadow areas. Summer works at golden hour — avoid midday in the open fields.
Access: Free parking in the main lot. Flat terrain throughout — fully accessible. The park is a town recreation area so expect some foot traffic on weekend afternoons; weekday evenings are quieter and better for portraits.
Ames Nowell State Forest
Ames Nowell State Forest sits on the Abington-Holbrook border and offers a quieter, more immersive alternative to Island Grove. The trail system connects through 600 acres of wooded conservation land around Ames Pond, giving seniors a forest-immersed feel without the recreational-park character. The wide, flat trails are easy to navigate, and the pond shoreline at golden hour produces warm reflected light that's naturally flattering for portraits.
Best time of day: Early morning or 1.5 hours before sunset. The pond's western shoreline catches the best golden-hour light. The forest trail interiors work from mid-morning through late afternoon — the canopy filters harsh midday light effectively.
Best season: Fall foliage peaks mid-October around the pond — the mixed hardwood canopy is excellent. May through June for fresh growth. Mosquitoes May through June — I carry repellent and plan around the worst spots.
Access: Accessible from the Abington side via Chestnut Street or from the Holbrook side off Linfield Street. Free parking at both access points. Flat, wide trails throughout — comfortable in any footwear. The walk to the pond shoreline is about 10 minutes.
Blue Hills Reservation (20 minutes)
For Abington seniors who want coastal character or genuinely dramatic terrain, Blue Hills Reservation is about 20 minutes north and provides rocky summit views, panoramic South Shore vistas, and October foliage that rivals anything in the region. The Skyline Trail ledges produce images with real scale — granite, open sky, and the entire South Shore laid out below. This pairs well with an Island Grove session in a Silver or Gold package.
Best time of day: Late afternoon into golden hour for the summit areas. The west-facing granite ledges light up beautifully. Ponkapoag Pond on the south side is a quieter waterside alternative for mid-morning sessions.
Best season: Mid-October for peak ridgeline foliage. Late May for wildflowers on the lower trails. Summer golden hour is workable but hot on the exposed summit.
Access: Free, DCR-managed. Crowded weekends — weekday sessions are strongly recommended. The summit hike involves moderate elevation; allow 20 minutes from parking to the best portrait ledges.
ABOUT THE SESSIONS
Senior portraits with genuine South Shore character.
South Shore Photography is based in Rockland, about 10-15 minutes from Abington. Every senior session starts with a planning consultation to talk through locations, outfits, sports or instruments you want to feature, and the overall style you’re going for. For Abington seniors, the most common setup is Island Grove at golden hour — the pond shoreline first for the warm-light hero shots, then the meadow areas for a different look before the light fades.
Abington High School seniors are some of my most frequent clients. I’m familiar with the school’s yearbook submission deadlines and can time sessions to make sure your gallery is delivered with margin to spare. If you’re considering the Senior Reps program for Class of 2027 or 2028, Abington is well within the coverage area.
Book early for fall sessions — September and October fill quickly across the South Shore, and the best golden-hour Island Grove slots go first. For the full planning breakdown, see the complete South Shore senior portrait guide.
