Where we shoot in Holbrook.

Ames Nowell State Forest

Ames Nowell is 600 acres of wooded trails wrapping around Ames Pond — and it's the defining natural backdrop for Holbrook senior portraits. The trail system is wide and flat, which means outfit changes and gear transport are easy. What makes it work for portraits is the pond: the reflective shoreline at golden hour throws warm light back onto your subject and creates layered compositions with water, treeline, and sky. The forest interiors along the main trail loop produce a completely different look — filtered canopy light, green tunnel framing, and that quiet conservation-land character that reads as distinctly New England.

Best time of day: Early morning or 1.5 hours before sunset. The pond shoreline faces west, so late-afternoon golden hour lights up the water beautifully. Morning sessions work for the eastern trail edges where the canopy filters the first light. Avoid midday — the open pond areas bake and the forest interior goes flat.

Best season: Fall foliage peaks mid-October and the mixed hardwood canopy around the pond is excellent. Late May through June for fresh green growth. Be prepared for mosquitoes May through June — I carry repellent and plan shorter pond-edge sets during bug season.

Access: Free parking off Linfield Street. The lot is small but rarely full for weekday evening sessions. The walk from parking to the best pond shoreline spots is 5-10 minutes on flat, well-maintained trails — comfortable in any footwear.

Blue Hills Reservation (15 minutes)

Blue Hills is 15 minutes from Holbrook center and gives seniors something the local conservation areas can't match — rocky summits with panoramic South Shore views. The Skyline Trail produces dramatic senior portraits with genuine scale: granite ledges, open sky, and the entire South Shore stretching out behind you. Ponkapoag Pond on the southern edge is a quieter waterside alternative for seniors who want the Blue Hills character without the hike.

Best time of day: Late afternoon into golden hour for the summit areas — the west-facing ledges light up beautifully as the sun drops. Ponkapoag Pond works well mid-morning when the light is softer and the water is calm.

Best season: Mid-October for peak fall foliage along the ridgeline — the color at Blue Hills rivals anything on the South Shore. Late spring (May) for wildflowers along the lower trails. Summer golden hour sessions work but plan for heat on the exposed summit.

Access: Free, DCR-managed. Multiple trailheads with parking. The reservation is crowded on weekends — weekday mornings and late afternoons are significantly better for portraits. The Skyline Trail involves moderate elevation; allow 20 minutes from parking to the summit ledges.

Holbrook Town Forest

Holbrook Town Forest is a small local conservation area — quiet, flat, and low-key. It doesn't have the scale of Ames Nowell or the drama of Blue Hills, but that's the point. For seniors who want a relaxed, natural backdrop without hiking or navigating crowds, the town forest delivers. The trails are short and simple, the canopy provides flattering diffused light, and you're unlikely to see another photographer there.

Best time of day: About 2 hours before sunset, when the low canopy filters the light into soft, directional warmth. The dense tree cover means this location forgives harsher light better than the open pond areas at Ames Nowell.

Best season: Year-round, though fall canopy color in mid-to-late October adds depth to the backgrounds. Spring green in May is also strong here.

Access: Street parking near the trailhead. Flat terrain throughout — no accessibility concerns. Sessions here are typically shorter (30-45 minutes) and pair well with a second stop at Ames Nowell or the Rockland studio.

Senior portraits with genuine South Shore character.

South Shore Photography is based in Rockland, about 15 minutes from Holbrook. Every senior session starts with a planning consultation where we talk through locations, outfits, sports gear or instruments, and the overall vibe you're going for. For Holbrook seniors, that usually means choosing between the wooded-pond character of Ames Nowell and the dramatic ridgeline at Blue Hills — or combining both in a Silver or Gold package.

Holbrook is close enough to my studio that I know these locations cold — the best parking spots, where the light hits at 6:30 PM in September versus October, and which trail sections are muddy after rain. That kind of local knowledge saves time during the session and means we spend more of our window actually shooting. For a deeper look at what the full senior portrait experience involves, see the complete South Shore senior portrait guide.

Book early for fall sessions — September and October fill quickly across the South Shore, and the best golden-hour slots at Ames Nowell go first. If you're a junior planning ahead, spring of junior year is the right time to reach out.
