FAMILY PORTRAIT LOCATIONS IN HOLBROOK
Where we shoot in Holbrook.
Ames Nowell State Forest
Ames Nowell is the standout family portrait location in Holbrook — 600 acres of wooded trails wrapping around Ames Pond. The trail system is wide and flat, which matters when you're pushing a stroller or keeping a toddler moving between setups. The pond shoreline at golden hour throws warm reflected light that's naturally flattering for group portraits, and the wooded trail sections provide a completely different look — filtered canopy light and green tunnel framing that works year-round.
Best time of day: 1.5 hours before sunset for the pond shoreline. The west-facing water catches the warm late light beautifully. Morning sessions work along the eastern trail edges where the canopy filters early light into soft, even illumination.
Best season: Fall foliage peaks mid-October — the mixed hardwood canopy around the pond is excellent. Late May through June for fresh green. Plan around mosquitoes May through June; I carry repellent and adjust locations within the park accordingly.
Access: Free parking off Linfield Street. The lot is small but rarely full for weekday evening sessions. Flat, stroller-friendly trails throughout — the walk from parking to the pond is 5-10 minutes. No fees.
Holbrook Town Forest
Holbrook Town Forest is small, quiet, and genuinely low-key — which is exactly what some families need. The terrain is flat throughout, the trails are short, and you're unlikely to see another soul during an evening session. For families with very young kids who need simple terrain and minimal walking, or grandparent sessions where comfort matters, this is the right call. The canopy provides flattering diffused light that forgives harsh conditions better than open-water locations.
Best time of day: About 2 hours before sunset. The dense tree cover means the light stays soft and directional even when the open areas nearby are still harsh.
Best season: Year-round. Fall canopy color adds warmth in mid-to-late October. Spring green in May gives the simplest, cleanest backdrop.
Access: Street parking near the trailhead. Flat terrain throughout — fully stroller-accessible. Sessions here pair well with a second stop at Ames Nowell for families who want variety without a long drive between locations.
Blue Hills Reservation (15 minutes)
Blue Hills is under 15 minutes from Holbrook center and gives families access to the most dramatic natural backdrop on the South Shore — rocky summit terrain with panoramic views. The lower trails and Ponkapoag Pond are more accessible options for families with younger kids who can't handle the summit hike. October foliage here rivals anything in the region.
Best time of day: Late afternoon for the summit views; mid-morning for Ponkapoag Pond when the water is calm.
Best season: Mid-October for peak fall color along the ridgeline. Late spring for wildflowers on the lower trails.
Access: Free, DCR-managed. Multiple trailheads with parking. Crowded on weekends — weekday mornings are significantly better for family sessions. Lower trails are stroller-friendly; summit trails are not.
ABOUT THE SESSIONS
Family portraits that feel like your family.
South Shore Photography is based in Rockland, about 15 minutes from Holbrook. Sessions are paced to keep everyone relaxed — activity-based direction rather than rigid posing produces images that look like your family actually looked that evening. For Holbrook families, that usually means meeting at Ames Nowell about 90 minutes before sunset and working the pond shoreline first while the light is warmest.
Kids who won't cooperate, dogs with their own agenda, parents who haven't been in front of a camera in years — we've seen it all and know how to work with it. Ames Nowell's flat trails are particularly forgiving for young-kid sessions; there's room for them to run between setups, and the pond itself usually holds their attention long enough for the group shots.
For families looking at what to wear, the earthy backdrop at Ames Nowell and Holbrook Town Forest pairs well with warm neutrals and earth tones. I send a detailed prep guide after booking — or see the family portrait outfit guide for the full breakdown.
