Plymouth Long Beach

The wide barrier beach that runs south of Plymouth Harbor, and the classic coastal choice for Plymouth seniors. Soft sand, beach grass, weathered dunes, and an open Atlantic horizon give almost limitless foregrounds, and the beach is long enough that we can find uncrowded stretches even in summer. Both Plymouth North and Plymouth South seniors use it — it's a short drive from either school.

Best time of day: The hour before sunset. The light comes in low and warm, and the dune grass behind the subject blurs into soft golden streaks. I check tide tables when planning — low tide gives us more beach and better light on the wet sand.

Best season: Late September and early October, when the beach is uncrowded and the dune grass turns warm amber. Late August and April–June are also quiet enough to have long stretches to ourselves.

Access: Parking is free in the off-season — which covers most senior sessions.

Plymouth Harbor Waterfront — Nelson Memorial Park, Town Wharf & Plymouth Rock

The harbor gives Plymouth sessions their unmistakable sense of place. On the north harbor, Nelson Memorial Park has mature trees, open lawn, and harbor channel views without the downtown crowds — a favorite for Plymouth North seniors. The Town Wharf adds working-harbor character: lobster boats at the docks and weathered pilings. Further south along Water Street, the Mayflower II dock and the Pilgrim Memorial State Park area around Plymouth Rock add historic vessel silhouettes and the portico columns, and the side streets of historic downtown add colonial-era facades and vine-covered walls.

Best time of day: Golden hour — sessions start 60–75 minutes before sunset, when day-trip traffic has cleared and the low sun turns the water and boats gold. Early weekday mornings work for downtown streets and a glassy harbor.

Best season: Summer for boats in the water and long evening light; fall for a quieter, moodier harbor after Labor Day; May and June for the cleanest backgrounds.

Access: Downtown parking can be tight in summer. Use the Water Street lots or the parking garage near the waterfront and meet at a set landmark — I send specific parking guidance in every session prep email.

Brewster Gardens

Brewster Gardens follows Town Brook through the historic center of Plymouth — formal plantings, stone footbridges over the brook, and mature trees overhead. It photographs completely differently from the waterfront and the beach: intimate, layered, and refined, with a sense of history. It's about five minutes from the north waterfront, so it pairs naturally with a Nelson Memorial Park or Town Wharf session.

Best time of day: Late afternoon, after a waterfront start. Best season: May, when wildflowers bloom along the path; fall, as the leaves drop along Town Brook.

Morton Park

Morton Park, off Long Pond Road, sits on Hedges Pond — wooded trails, open pond reflections, and filtered light through the canopy that reads deep New England woodland rather than coastal. It's one of the most underused senior portrait locations in Plymouth, which is exactly the point: most classmates won't have sessions here. About ten minutes from Plymouth North High.

Best time of day: Still air for mirror-image pond reflections. Best season: October, when the pond reflects the turning trees and the park goes gold and amber; spring for fresh green growth.

Myles Standish State Forest

The largest state forest in Massachusetts, spanning Plymouth and Carver — pitch pine corridors, open sandy clearings, and kettle ponds like College Pond with calm reflections. The light under the pine canopy is softer and more diffused than anywhere on the waterfront, so forest images stand out from the rest of the class. A favorite for Plymouth South seniors, athletes, and anyone with an outdoorsy, earthy style.

Best time of day: Still mornings for pond reflections; late afternoon for long, warm light shafts. Best season: Mid-October, when the understory turns burgundy and rust against the sandy soil. Access: Casual portrait sessions don't need a permit; state forest rules ask that we stay on designated paths. About 15 minutes from the waterfront.

Cranberry Bogs (seasonal)

During the late September–October harvest, the flooded bogs around Plymouth turn deep crimson — geometric berms, open-sky reflections, and an aesthetic that's native to this part of Massachusetts. Outside harvest, the bogs are greener and quieter but still beautiful. Access varies by property, so I handle all of it; I schedule a limited number of bog sessions each fall, so reach out in summer if you want one.
