It is one of the longest beaches on the South Shore, the wide sand stretches make it easy to find open space even on busy evenings, and the west-facing orientation catches golden hour with the Boston skyline silhouetted across the harbor. The combination of urban skyline and open beach is something no other South Shore town can offer. Evening sessions in August and September, when the light turns golden over the water, are especially beautiful.

Best time of day: 60–90 minutes before sunset for golden hour with the skyline backdrop. The west-facing orientation means direct sunset light over the water. Best season: Late August through October — thinner crowds, warmer light angle, and comfortable evening temperatures. Access: Free parking along Quincy Shore Drive. The beach is widest at mid-to-low tide.

Marina Bay is the modern waterfront alternative — a walkable marina district with clean walkways, moored boats, and an urban-coastal character that is completely different from Wollaston Beach. The architectural lines and water reflections work well for families who want something more polished and contemporary. It also works nicely as a second stop after a Wollaston Beach session.

Best time of day: Late afternoon through golden hour. The marina walkways catch warm light from the west. Best season: Year-round — the architectural backdrop is not seasonally dependent. Access: Public parking in the Marina Bay lot.

Merrymount Park is one of the most underutilized portrait locations in the area. Forested trails, open meadows, and a quiet atmosphere make it feel far removed from Quincy's urban character. Families who want a natural, unhurried session away from the beach often find Merrymount gives them images that feel more intimate and personal. The canopy light in late spring and early fall is excellent.

Best time of day: Late afternoon for dappled canopy light. Overcast days work well for even, flattering illumination under the trees. Best season: May for spring green canopy, mid-October for warm amber foliage. Access: Free parking at the park entrance. Flat, stroller-friendly trails.

Blue Hills Reservation on the Quincy-Milton line offers a completely different scale — rocky granite ridges, forested hillsides, and elevated views that produce family portraits with a genuinely dramatic backdrop. The Chickatawbut summit provides panoramic views that make images feel expansive and bold. This is not a typical family portrait location, which is exactly what makes it memorable.

Best time of day: Late afternoon for warm directional light on the granite. Best season: October for peak foliage against the rock. Access: Free parking at the Quincy trailheads. I choose trail sections with minimal elevation for families with young children.

Summer (June - August) — Wollaston Beach is best early morning (before 9 AM) or 90 minutes before sunset. Marina Bay works well at any time because the architectural setting provides its own shade and visual interest.

Fall (September - October) — peak season. Wollaston Beach at golden hour in September and October is the single most popular family portrait window in Quincy. Merrymount Park peaks in mid-October foliage. Blue Hills in early October is exceptional. Book 6-8 weeks ahead for October weekends.

Spring (May) — Merrymount Park is at its most photogenic in May when the canopy greens up and the wildflower areas bloom. The Blue Hills trails are also excellent in late spring. Wollaston Beach works well for spring morning sessions.
